Two allegedly drunk drivers arrested for crash that left pedestrian dead on 91 Freeway

Two allegedly drunk drivers were arrested after a series of crashes on the 91 Freeway that left a pedestrian dead on Sunday.
The crashes happened at around 3:15 a.m. on eastbound lanes of the freeway just west of Adams Street, according to the California Highway Patrol.
Officers were dispatched to the scene after learning of the crash, which involved two cars, a Jeep Patriot and a Kia Sportage, said the CHP statement.
“Preliminary investigation indicated the Jeep and Kia were involved in a previous crash resulting in minor injuries and the Jeep becoming disabled in lanes. Moments later, the occupants of the Jeep exited the vehicle and were pedestrians in lanes,” the statement said.
At the same time, a semi truck traveling eastbound tried to swerve around the Jeep but lost control, slamming into the concrete wall on the right side of the road, which caused it to overturn, police said.
“A Toyota Camry traveling eastbound behind the commercial tractor-trailer also took evasive action in an attempt to avoid the Jeep,” police said. “The Toyota struck the Jeep and a male pedestrian — a former passenger of the Jeep — resulting in fatal injuries.”
The victim was identified as 21-year-old Riverside man Alfredo Verganza-Lucas, according to the Riverside County Coroner’s Office.
The force of the crash caused the Jeep to push forward where it hit another of the passengers who was standing in front of it. They were hospitalized after suffering major injuries. Their condition was not immediately noted by police.
The river of the Toyota was uninjured in the crash police said.
Both the drivers of the Jeep and Kida were arrested for driving under the influence of alcohol. Neither has yet been identified.
Anyone who knows more is asked to contact CHP investigators at (951) 324-7210.
